Banner up there

The new banner is courtesy of Inwe's art. She draws and paints so many pieces that I take photos of them instead of storing every single sheet of paper. We tried to give her a large folder for storage, but she never used it. So, we keep a stack, photograph the best ones, and recycle most of them. One day she'll move to canvases. You people will have to begin hanging them on your walls when you get a surprise package, courtesy of Inwe.

Detailing Life

In recent times Phill has been working more and more at the hospital. Returned are the days of being a fellow when he'd leave before I'd wake and return after I had fallen asleep. There are various reasons for this with just one being that the neonatal intensive care unit is incredibly full and busy. The other reasons are complicated and unnecessary to relate. As this is the kids' blog, which I hope they read one day, I wanted to preserve the time that Daddy couldn't do nearly as much with them as he'd like.

The days and nights are mine to fill with activities. For most of the summer, that has consisted of visiting the pool, eating dinner there, showering there, and then falling into bed with a request to have "Daddy give me a kiss when he gets home". We've not visited half of what there is to do here in NOLA, much of that due to me only having so many hands. With the 90 degree days with smothering humidity, the zoo has been mostly off limits. We seem to have a curse over us regarding City Park's Storyland Amusement Park; rain clouds shed their contents whenever we are near.

Our neighbor's granddaugthers visited this past week, allowing both Inwe and Larien to have two vibrant children as play companions. I'm pretty sure that the doors have been opened and closed more times these past five days than they have in our entire time in New Orleans. The girls like each other so much that a few nights we had to forcibly put them in their separate houses. I should add that taking all of them to the pool certainly made being a mom at the pool easier. My presence wasn't required for entertainment. That didn't mean I kept out of the water, though. I just didn't play with them as I wasn't invited.

Just a few houses away are three children that are the same ages as my kids. The other, older neighbors on the street confess that they like hearing children yelling to each other as they run along the sidewalk to play with their friends. The other mom and I attempt to keep them quiet, but our efforts usually are thwarted by six children being children.

I volunteered to take the eldest child, a girl of 6, to the pool with us. Her mom, Em, asked if Finwe wanted to play with her boys, ages 4 and nearly 3. Before I could answer, Finwe said he would and followed Em to her house. Before he turned into their gate he spun to face me, both index fingers pointed at me. "You be good now."

OK, Finwe. I will. I'll be good about blogging so that your Dad can open up this site at night or at work while he's waiting on a lab result before feeing confident about coming home. He can read my words about how you told me to be good just before I would have told you the same thing. I will make sure that he knows how inviting and polite his daughters have been to others lately, perhaps finally learning that exclusion isn't the best way, that life isn't boring simply because you cannot set the artificial Christmas tree in your sister's room so it can be decorated. Maybe he'll like hearing that his kids don't mind the heat and know when to call it a day at the pool. So while Inwe perfects her artistic skills, and Larien sits happily beside me to complete two reading lessons after begging to read one of the books on our favorite reading website (www.starfall.com), and while Finwe discovers how to calm himself after massive frustration, Phill can know that his kids are growing and doing well this summer.

Busy: It's more than just an excuse

On a blogging note: My writing has been taking center stage during my off-time from the kids. If I am not crafting the newest story, I am editing the first manuscript. I have little energy left for blogging, even about the children.

They still say funny things. They are awfully cute.

Finwe has embraced underwear. He dearly loves to pee in the grass. Wonder what the pre-school teachers will think of that in the fall.

Larien, continuing her discontent regarding her school, complained that she went to "Baby School." I told her that we'd begin learning more non-baby subjects at the house. She's embraced reading lessons far better than Inwe first did. Of course, maybe I'm better this go-round.

Inwe, well, she's growing. The educational shows that Larien and Finwe still adore bore her. She wants Ben 10, Scooby Doo, Tom and Jerry, and some show about a dragon that's blue. I remember that from my own childhood--wanting to see different shows.

I'll try to write more, but don't count on it.

Those are my father's eyebrows

That's all I can think when I look at this photo.

Having this thought makes me wonder what you would like to see or read about. What do you want to know about The Telemnars? Ask away. I'm not very good at having others tell me what to write, but I'm going to try it.

So, tell me. Give me a request in the comments. I'm all eyes.

22 January 2008

Can you handle a pause? And a hodge podge of thoughts?

I would like to write more about the children, but time is short for me lately. Phill is on a looonnnggg stretch of playing doctor and hasn't been around much. I forget to use the camera, and although, Inwe has been taking photos with the old digital camera, we don't have the cord to upload. You are denied the pleasure of seeing screen captures of the television, blurry images of the beta fish, and a rather devilish photo of Phill. Perhaps I will find a cord or order a replacement.

Inwe discovered the world of Mardi Gras today on a class field trip. The girls all wear their red jumpers. The playground this afternoon exuded cheeriness. You would think that I'd send the camera with her on this trip, but no. Silly us. She told us that the float with the scarlet macaw was her favorite. And, based on the information she remembers, the people who ride the horses that wear green "rock the house" during the parade. The Uptown parades begin on Friday. I will have the camera. I will take photos. I will post. Promise. Stick in the eye and all that.

Larien reports to me each day that she did not have a good day, but she refuses to elaborate. Tomorrow she visits the pre-K program at McGehee School, the parent organization of the program she attends. Maybe she'll shine so much that they will admit she should be in that class. Nah. I'm dreaming. Yet, I do hope that she will have a good time and be excited that the Fall will bring new challenges.

I take this time to renounce the nickname I bestowed on Larien when she was a wee one. When I say "Trouble", I am referring to Finwe. Finwe, the body slammer. Finwe, the boy who has decided that he DOES NOT WANT A DIAPER CHANGE. To which I respond, then pee pee and poopie on the potty. I DON'T WANT TO. Then you get a diaper change. I DON'T WANT TO.

All that ends when Inwe steps between us offering to change the diaper. Bless that Inwe, if you believe in those things. She can be an angel.

Trip to the Aquarium Inspires

As quick as we could after arriving in New Orleans, we bought a membership to the Audubon Institute, which has a zoo and an aquarium in the city. For $144, we can visit the zoo and the aquarium whenever the fancy strikes us and we can bring an extra person.

Already, we've been to the zoo twice as a family. Honestly, we visited one day just to eat the gumbo at the Louisiana swamp part of the facility. Good, good stuff. Hot. Good. Mmmmmm.

This past week, we took a trip to the aquarium where we walked under a tank and through a tank. We strolled along the Mississippi River, petted a snake, an alligator, one baby nurse shark, and many friendly (and barb-less) stingrays. The children marveled at the sea horses and the different medusae in artfully arranged black tanks.

Both Larien and Inwe used the day's inspiration to create art. Inwe chose a fish book. Larien, a tableau, part of which I used for the new banner.

Yes, I still have children

And, they still do cute things, say lovely comments, and try to drive me batty each day. Here is an example that Larien said last Wednesday as our afternoon together was drawing to a close.

I said, "C'mon, Larien. We need to pick up Inwe and Finwe from school."

Larien responded, "You can pick up Inwe, Mommy, but leave Finwe there."

17 March 2007

Pause

Phill will be gone for four days on a conference. This means very little blogging from me. My spring fever against blogging will continue.

15 March 2007

Where are the kids?

Please know that everything here is fine. I'm busy. The kids are well. I'm well. Phill's well. Move along. There's nothing to see here.

Well, sure, there probably is something here, but I am uninspired lately. Call it blogging spring fever.

The truth is that during a conversation the other evening I was reminded of something about Inwe that can only be described as upsetting. I have always wanted this to be a happy blog. A sign that life moves along on its trajectory no matter how many speed bumps. My impulse is to write about Inwe, but it isn't happy. It is a reminder of a devastating event in our lives that is not easily pushed to the side.

It is a speed bump of such proportion that we (Inwe and I) have hit a deep trough. She jumps above the darkness more that I do, but she still knows it is there. She is a more somber child at times. This is who she is now. Everyone needs to accept that.

Now, don't mention it again. I live with the reminder everyday. It is the reason for some of my tears.

All Tuckered Out

Finwe has been very ill. He began with vomiting on Saturday morning. By afternoon, we thought we had had the worst of it. He slept through the night, which we took to mean that Sunday would be okay for him, a day of recovery.

How wrong we were.

On Sunday I held him from the moment he woke until this morning, when he woke up next to me in our bed. He could keep nothing inside of him--either end. It was after 8pm when he finally drank some tea, and his body allowed him to keep it. His heart was racing. He was panting. His fever was nearing the limit of over the counter medicines to control it. We kept our fingers crossed as he slept again in my arms.

9pm--okay, still with his heart racing

10 pm--liquids kept inside, another four ounces, heart racing but slightly less.

11pm--more liquids in, fever finally under control, heart rate back to normal

He's still dealing with messy diapers and doesn't want me to put him down. I won't be blogging until Wednesday. This is done one handed with him collapsed over my shoulder. Anyone want to come clean my house? My help is dealing with a bad case of arthritis. Phill is good dad, but he stinks at keeping things in order.

19 February 2007

Nothing

Due to nothing interesting or exciting or even remotely intriguing occurring in regards to the children, I will not be updating the blog for the next few days. Here are my reasons (and very good ones, if I say so myself):
  1. Phill is ill.
  2. I am ill.
  3. The children are healthy.
  4. Swim lessons are tomorrow which means a long day and lots of hair drying due to the wickedly cold weather.
  5. It's tax season.
  6. The girls are dressing in ugly clothes and lots of layers.
  7. All Finwe says lately is "ACK!" unless he sees a bunny or a cat, then he says "AT!".
  8. My brain has stopped working.
  9. Wasn't last Tuesday enough drama for a while.
  10. The girls have discovered educational computer games, which severely limits my computer time.
Carry on.

Snow Day

There are two, maybe three, inches of snow on the ground. What this means in central Virginia is that schools are closed and kids are playing. I've been informed that when they shake off the sleepies my children are going outside.

Normally, I would be quite happy to do silly snow stuff, but Finwe decided to not sleep much last night. I'm operating on five hours of disjointed sleep.

28 December 2006

Oops!

The kids and I spent time with Cirdan and Findarato today. I forgot to bring the camera, which means that my mind is also quite blank. There were balls, small dump trucks, remote control monster trucks, dogs leaping/running/wrestling, swings, slides, mud. I had to drag the girls away before Finwe exploded into a tirade of tears.

He saved that for tonight when he refused to go to bed.

My rhetorical question of the day: Why can't children learn how to fall asleep once and be done with it? Why must there be negotiations over the number of books or the type of sleepwear? What changed from Monday evening with Finwe? For the love of Mom, what? Can I have my drink some milk, get some kisses, lay down to directly go to sleep baby back? Please? I beg you! Wait? Who am I begging? Oh, shut up and go to bed.

No pictures for you

So, since 9 ish I have been attempting to post photos to show you our first day of winter present opening.

You don't get visuals.

Inwe opened an art portfolio. This is more a gift for me so I don't have to continually move piles and piles of artwork. She's happy with it.

Larien opened a table top play stove that I found for $10. It makes sounds and has lots of accessories. She had finally outgrown the kitchen that Auntie J sent to Inwe all those years ago. The girls played with it for nearly two hours.

Finwe got a ring stacking toy. What did he do with it? If you said, "throw all the pieces", you would be correct.

I'll attempt posting pictures later today.

11 December 2006

Sick

Finwe is sick with sniffles. I just spent nearly two hours getting him to sleep.

Larien is sick with sniffles and coughs. She's sleeping with the help of Benadryl.

Inwe will get it some time this week. (See, as a parent I sometimes have to think worst case scenario so that I don't plan something wonderful only to have it dashed by snot.)

However, we did manage to have a lovely afternoon at a friend's Christmas party. It was a houseful of children girls ranging from 5 weeks to 5 years. Finwe was the exceptional boy. Not like that makes much difference to him.

The mom did a great job organizing the party. The kids glued and glittered wooden painted trees and gingerbread men to hang on the tree. The girls played a game that is quite popular in England where this mom originates. And, lastly, the kids used sprinkles to decorate sugar cookies. Oh, my girls had a blast and were the last to leave. Plus, Finwe only wanted me to hold him for about a quarter of the time.

The entire point of this post is that sick kids=less blogging. Sorry. I'll probably have a flurry of activity and pictures and all that later. I won't promise, but I will do my best.

10 December 2006

Two days and nothing happened?

I find it amazing that I can spend a weekend with my children and in the end have nothing noteworthy to share on this blog. My brain has recorded no "What did you say?" or particularly cute or sweet moments. Is that because those didn't happen or is it because I forgot to notice them?

This weekend I would vote for the former.

Inwe went to a birthday party. I don't know what happened because we didn't hang around. Perhaps something cute occurred. Maybe Inwe will tell me sometime this week. She did have good time.

You already know that Finwe has been having gastrointestinal issues all week. These continued into the weekend. I held him for nearly an hour and a half last night as he screamed in pain from gas bubbles. How do I know it was gas? The nose knows. Oh, it knows, that nose. I am happy to report that he remained in the same clothes all day. I have hope.

Larien has been feeling a bit under the weather, but the sickness isn't one to keep her from school or from enjoying life. She did emphatically, but calmly inform her preschool teacher that she was angry with her. And, (and really this is quite blogworthy) Larien took a nap at school. She didn't just lay quietly for half a hour; she actually slept. That's when I knew something wasn't quite right.

T felt the power of Larien this evening as she refused to bathe or go up the stairs for bed. Not that this fazed T much. Phill and I happily chatted with other parents and teachers at the school, adult only, Holiday Party. It is lovely to arrive home with all three children sleeping soundly.

This weekend was just about spending time together. We went shopping together for a new sofa. We played with the dog. We watched the new fish. We just were. Well, we did decorate the Christmas tree. So, I guess we did do something.

03 October 2006

Are you Reading?

Pardon me for being so blunt, but what is with you people? My daughter married a dinosaur and none of you make a comment???!!!???? What, do you have other things to do, huh?

25 September 2006

Slow down

I know. I know. I've posted nothing in the past few days. You ask, "How can it be possible that nothing noteworthy has happened in the past few days?"

I'll answer. Finwe is walking. He's adorable but has also been a non-sleeper/night waker lately. My brain is not responding well despite frequent injections of caffeine.

Inwe is drawing, coloring, being creative and knocking the socks off all of the educators at her school. She goes on her first field trip tomorrow and is exuberant.

Larien has begun calling me Mom in a very disgusted, teenager fashion. This is very annoying and cute all at the same time.

Finwe has now banged his head on the floor and needs attendance. Silly thing.

By the way, posting will be slow in the next few days.

Cache Cleared, Photo Up

Here is the photo of the "Me" bag made by Inwe last Thursday. Above the tree is her real name in penne; I cropped that out. I know some of you may not believe me, but I did not design this bag. Inwe, all 4 3/4 years of her did it. I did the gluing with the hot glue so the shell pasta would stay on. Inwe was responsible for the gluing on the "sand" and the "sea oats". Normal white, school glue was all that was needed there. She is still quite proud of it.

22 August 2006

Expect nothing . . .

and you'll be happy with nearly anything.

That's how I want you to think of this blog for the next few days. Why?

My van will be in for normal maintenance tomorrow meaning that I will have to shove all three kids into Phill's Ford Escape for a trip to the library (as promised today to two very upset children who wanted to go TODAY!) and to get some heads of hair cut.

And, to add to the chaos, Finwe is currently in serious, painful teething mode. Both of his upper front teeth are descending through his gums. The right one made its initial break yesterday. The left is still working on it. He's very unhappy. He won't nap. He's waking at all hours of the night.

It took infant's ibuprofen and some Orajel on his gums to get him to just sit still this evening. He doesn't want to drink anything for very long. He does like chewing on food, though.

I'm tired. Phill is tired. The girls are a tad frightened of me as I'm a bit scraggly and short tempered.

Expect very little until Finwe decides that he can tolerate the pain or until the pain can no longer tolerate Finwe.
