There's a Lesson In Here Somewhere

This summer I have pulled out the Teach Your Child to Read in 100 Easy Lessons book to use with Larien. We've done 14 lessons. She's already made huge leaps, often skipping ahead of me in the lessons to read a word instead of doing the practice exercises like rhyming or drawing out the sounds of letters. I find teaching her easier than teaching Inwe, which could be explained by the fact that I have done this before. However, it is more complicated than that.

For Inwe, I began the lessons because I thought she could handle them. She understood letters had sounds and that they made words. While she could do the lessons, what should have taken 20 minutes, took 10-15 minutes longer. Inwe, for all her amazing abilities with language, began too young.

I didn't repeat that mistake with Larien. Of course, she had the benefit of listening to Inwe and I rhyming non-sense words in the car and watching her sister develop her reading skills. Larien also notices the time that both Phill and I take with Inwe to help her read. She's eager to have some of that time herself.

Larien amazes me with how quickly she's catching the reading train.
