Junk Food for Your Brain

"Mommy, my favorite thing to do is watch TV," Inwe said earlier today as we rode to the gym.

"Oh, Inwe, just that statement alone makes me want to have the TV off all day."

"Really?" This was said with wide-eyed surprise from the seat behind me. "But I like it."

"It's junk food for your brain. You need growing food for your brain."

"Like Miss Cheri says we need growing food for strong bones and muscles?"

"Yes. Activities like reading, coloring, drawing pictures, math sheets. Even playing Barbies with Larien is good for your brain."

I have constant internal battles regarding the amount and types of TV that the girls watch. Larien still like the educational shows like Sesame Street and Dora. Inwe is beyond that age, but shows geared towards older kids aren't interesting to her either. Phill lets her watch SpongeBob and Fairly OddParents and Danny Phantom and such. I really don't want her to have too much of this type of show. My response is just to ban it all together unless Finwe is being particularly difficult and I need the instant babysitting to get him calm.

I know I am going to be the same way about TV. I don't want my child to be addicted to it. On the other hand, my childhood would not have been the same without Star Blazers and Scooby.

I know exactly how you feel. Alan has the tv on all the time. We had a tv conversation just over the weekend in fact. Alan doesn't seem to have an internal battle at all about it. Hmm...

WaWa and I have had the same conversation! It's an epidemic of our generation.
